The Song of Songs awakens the desire to love and be loved
“Nothing is as unarmed and disarming as love, in its truth. It is the acceptance of incompleteness and vulnerability. It is understanding that life is built through welcoming the other, or it is not built at all.”
Invited to the Meeting di Rimini event, “L’amor che move il sole e le altre stelle,” on August 24, 2026, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça engaged in a dialogue with poet Davide Brullo, addressing the question of the responsibility to speak the truth about love, starting from the Song of Songs.
In his address, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education emphasized that, in an age marked by the difficulty of building authentic relationships, the Song of Songs should be understood not merely as a biblical text, but as a true icon of love. It is a manual that teaches love in all its facets: the act of loving and being loved, the value of reciprocity, love as wound, quest, listening, shared solitude and prayer, and the profound dignity of the human person.
