The University of Notre Dame organized the Summit on AI, Faith, and Human Flourishing from September 22 to 24. This event brought together more than 200 leaders from various sectors, including technology, academia, religion, government, and media. The initiative, in which the Center for Digital Culture (CDC) of the Dicastery for Culture and Education participated, addresses the rapid advance of AI and aims to foster ethical reflection from a Christian perspective. It seeks to ensure active participation in shaping the digital future.

The event began with a mass presided by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, who stressed that AI represents one of the great moral challenges of our time, particularly in what concerns the dignity of work, human equality, and care for the planet. Cardinal Pierre called on the Church to guide the responsible use of technology towards the common good.

During the first day, Meghan Sullivan, director of the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good, introduced the DELTA framework, an ethical proposal grounded in Christian values like dignity, embodiment, love, transcendence and agency. This approach provides practical guidance across various sectors, including work, education, religion, and family life. The program featured presentations by experts, academics, and industry leaders, who shared insights from the technology sector, the impact of automation on workplace dignity, or the implications of AI on human relationships and spiritual perception.

The meeting featured working sessions and discussion groups focused on the DELTA framework, facilitating interdisciplinary exchange and ethical engagement. This summit signifies the beginning of a comprehensive initiative by the University of Notre Dame to establish a network of Christian leaders in the field of AI ethics. Future activities, publications and tools will be developed to promote human flourishing in the digital age, in which the CDC aims to become a preferred partner of this initiative.
