Visit by the Dicastery to Catholic Universities in Chile
From 23 to 27 March 2026, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, together with Fr Benjamín Aguirre, Official of the Dicastery for the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world, visited Santiago de Chile, Valparaíso and Concepción, where they visited several of the country’s Catholic universities.

After visiting the San Joaquín Campus of the Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the Ministry of Education, where he was received by the new Minister, María Paz Arzola, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça chaired a conference on the identity, excellence and mission of the contemporary Catholic university. A small part of the day was also devoted to art and architecture: Lo Contador Campus of the Faculty of Architecture was the venue for a meeting with architects Cecilia Puga, Pedro Alonso and Martín Tironi.

Visit to the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso
Pope Leo XIV’s apostolic letter Drawing New Maps of Hope served as the central theme of the addresses delivered to the Catholic colleges of the Diocese of Valparaíso and to all those present at the inauguration of the Academic Year at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso (PUCV): at the heart of the discussion were the importance of Catholic education and the crucial role played by Catholic universities in the process of the integral formation of the person. In the PUCV’s Hall of Honour, His Eminence was awarded the title of Doctor Scientiae et Honoris Causa.
