Kiluanji Kia Henda

Kiluanji Kia Henda (Luanda, Angola, 1979) é artista autodidata, começou por explorar a fotografia influenciado pelo contexto familiar e, desde então, desenvolveu uma linguagem visual que cruza fotografia, vídeo, instalação, performance e escultura. A sua prática artística articula ironia e crítica política, abordando temas como o legado colonial, o modernismo africano, a identidade e a construção da memória coletiva. Em vez de se limitar à factualidade histórica, Henda propõe ficções especulativas que abrem espaço para narrativas alternativas e temporalidades deslocadas. A sua obra reflete sobre a ocupação e manipulação do espaço público, questionando os processos simbólicos e políticos que moldam a paisagem urbana e o imaginário coletivo, particularmente no contexto pós-colonial angolano. Colabora regularmente com artistas e coletivos da cena artística contemporânea de Luanda, mantendo uma abordagem interdisciplinar marcada por uma forte consciência social. Recebeu o Prémio Nacional de Arte e Cultura de Angola (2012) e o Frieze Artist Award (2018), e participou em residências internacionais em cidades como Veneza, Sharjah, Arles e Cidade do Cabo. Expôs nas bienais de Veneza, Dakar, Gwangju e São Paulo, e em instituições como o Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Zeitz MOCAA, Guggenheim Bilbao e New Museum, consolidando uma presença crítica nos debates globais sobre representação, poder e colonialidade.

Kiluanji Kia Henda (Luanda, Angola, 1979) is a self-taught artist who began exploring photography under the influence of his family environment. Since then, he has developed a visual language that spans photography, video, installation, performance, and sculpture. His artistic practice combines irony with political critique, addressing themes such as the colonial legacy, African modernism, identity, and the construction of collective memory. Rather than confining himself to historical fact, Henda creates speculative fictions that open up space for alternative narratives and displaced temporalities. His work reflects on the occupation and manipulation of public space, questioning the symbolic and political processes that shape the urban landscape and the collective imagination, particularly within the Angolan postcolonial context. He regularly collaborates with artists and collectives from Luanda’s contemporary art scene, maintaining an interdisciplinary approach informed by a strong social consciousness. Henda was awarded the Angolan National Prize for Arts and Culture (2012) and the Frieze Artist Award (2018). He has also participated in international artist residencies in cities including Venice, Sharjah, Arles, and Cape Town. His work has been exhibited at the Venice, Dakar, Gwangju, and São Paulo Biennials, as well as at major international institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, Tate Modern, Zeitz MOCAA, Guggenheim Bilbao, and the New Museum, establishing him as a significant voice in global debates on representation, power, and coloniality.
