Human values at the heart of the digital revolution

news ‒ 25 May 2026

The path indicated by the Pope does not raise barricades, nor does it reject the use of AI outright.

Pope Leo XIV’s first Encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, places the relationship between artificial intelligence and human dignity at the center of the Church’s reflection on the digital age. Published on 25 May 2026, the document calls for safeguarding the centrality of the human person in a time increasingly shaped by technology and algorithms.

Rather than rejecting technological progress, the Holy Father highlights the positive potential of artificial intelligence when used ethically and responsibly, as a tool that can foster solidarity and human development without replacing the human person. At the same time, the Encyclical warns against the risks linked to the uncritical use of AI, including social exclusion, misinformation, manipulation of information, and the polarization of public debate.

The document ultimately encourages a shared commitment to the “humanization” of the digital world, ensuring that technological advancement does not come at the expense of humanity itself.
