Visit by the President of the International Cycling Union (UCI)

news ‒ 20 February 2026

On 20 February, the Dicastery received a visit from Mr David Lappartient, President of the International Cycling Union (UCI - Unione Ciclistica Internazionale), an organisation founded in 1900 which regulates and oversees the various cycling disciplines, as well as the organisation of international cycling competitions, of which Athletica Vaticana is a member.

During discussions with Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery, and with Monsignor Paul Tighe, Secretary of the Dicastery, they reflected on the impact of the recent Letter on sport, «Life in Abundance», and on future initiatives aimed at promoting sport as a builder of a society capable of breathing the value of peace.

As a sign of the Church's intention to acknowledge the significance of this cultural phenomenon, mention was made of a particularly significant moment: on 1 June, the Giro d’Italia passed through Vatican City. In the same letter, «Life in Abundance», the Holy Father writes of this historic moment: "This approach that led to the decision to welcome the Giro d’Italia to the Vatican: the great cycling race is a sporting event, but also a popular narrative that transcends territories, generations and social differences, and speaks to the heart of the human community on its journey".

At the end of the meeting, the President of the UCI handed over a ‘cyclist’s jersey of peace’ to the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
