Young people reflect on sport

news ‒ 02 February 2026

On January 28, OPES (Associazione di Promozione Sociale e Sportiva) promoted the presentation of the project «Sport in the Constitution: Dialogues for Active Citizenship» («Lo Sport in Costituzione: Dialoghi per una Cittadinanza Attiva»).This initiative involved about 100 high school students and university undergraduates from Rome, who will present their 10 proposals to representatives of the invited institutions to make sport more accessible and responsive to the needs of the younger generation.

Among the various proposals presented were the need for more psychologists to support young athletes, more infrastructure to encourage people with disabilities to participate in sport, and the distribution of a “sports voucher” to encourage young people, especially the poorest, to participate in sport.

The event took place at the CONI Hall of Honor (Rome), to which the Dicastery for Culture and Education, the Holy See body that manages the Church's relationship with the world of sport, represented by Don Miguel Cardoso, was also invited.

After considering the proposals, Don Miguel shared some information about the work carried out by the Dicastery in the field of sport and congratulated the project for bringing together two fundamental concepts: democracy and sport. If democracy was born in ancient Greece thanks to sport, it is interesting to see how democracy today provides a platform for reflecting on sport itself, by welcoming the proposals of young people.
